Basing 12mm Miniatures

The colour, texture and detail on miniature bases can greatly enhance the appearance of a unit of miniatures. Sometimes highly detailed and eye catching bases on miniatures can look great when photographed in isolation, but not so good when placed on terrain where they stand out rather than blend in. The guide below is primarily aimed at achieving the ‘blend in’ effect. Therefore the green flock used on the figure bases is the same as that of the Hexon terrain which is the widely available Noch 50210.

Step 1

Remove the painted strips or individual miniatures from the wooden strip using a side cutter.  Then using a metal file, make sure that the bottom of the base is flat by removing any lumps and bumps.

Step 2

Using small amounts of superglue stick the miniatures onto the plastic base, cutting the strips where necessary, using side cutters.

Top tip!

When you want to achieve a random collection of clothing colours, for example, in a unit of Saxon warriors, you can enhance this effect at the basing stage. By mixing figures painted in various colours from different wooden painting strips, onto the same base, it is possible to further enhance the irregular appearance of the unit.

Step 3

Once the glue is set you can fill the gaps between metal miniature bases using various basing materials. I personally use a mixture of dark interior wood filler and silver sand which gives a good earth colour and texture. This is easily applied using small metal dental type tools or spatulas.

 Step 4

After the filler has hardened you can apply suitably coloured flock or static grass to all, most,  or just some small patches of the base using PVA or wood glue.

Step 5 (optional)

On the underside of the base you can put a couple of strips of self adhesive ‘base backing’ which will enable your  miniatures to stand on sloping terrain without sliding out of position. This will enable you to use your armies on hills that look like hills and not flat topped terraces!
