ZULU WAR RULES ADAPTATIONS HORDES AND HEROES

Here are my fast play Zulu War rules which again I have simply added stats for period specific troop types to the general Hordes and Heroes rule set :)

USUTHU!

FAST PLAY RULES FOR WARGAMING THE 1879 ANGLO-ZULU WAR – ADAPTED FROM KALLISTRA’S HORDES AND HEROES HEXED BASED RULES



UNIT FORMATIONS
ZULU WARRIORS – EACH UNIT OF 6 BASES REPRESENTS ONE ZULU IVIYO (A NUMBER OF AMAVIYO MAKES UP AN IBUTHO) ANY NUMBER OF IBUTHO’S MAKE UP THE ZULU IMPI.
ZULUS ADOPTED AN OPEN FORMATION, EACH UNIT IS X2 BASES WIDE AND X3 BASES DEEP.
ZULU WARRIOR UNITS HAVE X1 DIE EACH FIRING TURN TO REPRESENT THE FACT A NUMBER OF ZULUS CARRIED FIREARMS ALONSIDE THE STABBING SPEAR.
ZULU WARRIORS CAN CHOOSE TO ADOPT A PRONE FORMATION ( LIE DOWN) - PLACE A PRONE YELLOW MARKER IN HEX. THEY CANNOT FIRE OR MAKE FURTHER MOVEMENT THAT TURN WHEN IN A PRONE FORMATION.
ZULU MARKSMEN - EACH UNIT OF 4 BASES REPRESENTS ONE UNIT OF ZULU MARKSMEN ARMED WITH MUSKETS.
UNIT IS X2 BASES WIDE AND X2 BASES DEEP.
ZULU WARRIORS CAN CHOOSE TO ADOPT A PRONE FORMATION ( LIE DOWN) PLACE A PRONE YELLOW MARKER IN HEX. THEY CANNOT FIRE OR MAKE FURTHER MOVEMENT THAT TURN WHEN IN A PRONE FORMATION.

BRITISH REGULARS – EACH UNIT OF BRITISH REGULARS IS MADE UP OF X4 BASES. BASES CAN BE ARRANGED X1 BASE WIDE AND X4 BASES DEEP OR X2 BASES WIDE AND X2 BASES DEEP.
THEY CAN BE SPLIT INTO HALF UNITS PER HEX MADE UP OF X2 BASES SIDE BY SIDE TO MAKE UP AN OPEN ORDER FIRING LINE.
UNITS OF X4 BASES CAN ALSO ADOPT A RALLYING SQUARE.
(NOTE A NUMBER OF X4 BASE UNITS CAN JOIN TOGETHER TO FORM REGIMENTAL OR EVEN BRIGADE SQUARES.)

NATAL NATIVE CONTINGENT – EACH UNIT IS MADE UP OF X6 BASES, X2 BASES WIDE AND X3 BASES DEEP.
EACH UNIT HAS X1 DICE FOR FIRING AS A SMALL NUMBER OF NNC TROOPS WERE ISSUED WITH RIFLES.

VOLUNTEER & BRITISH MOUNTED UNITS – MOUNTED UNITS ARE MADE UP OF X4 BASES, X2 BASES WIDE AND X2 BASES DEEP.
MOUNTED UNITS CAN DISMOUNT AND FIRE AND FIGHT ON FOOT- X2 BASES OF INFANTRY SIDE BY SIDE WITH X2 BASES OF HORSES AND HORSE HOLDERS PLACED BEHIND THEM IN THE SAME HEX.(IT TAKES ONE MOVEMENT POINT TO MOUNT OR DISMOUNT).

ARTILLERY UNITS – ARTILLERY UNITS ARE MADE UP OF ONE OR TWO GUNS PLUS THEIR LIMBERS PER HEX.
GUNS, GATTLING MACHINE GUNS OR ROCKETS ARE CLASSED AS ARTILLERY UNITS.
GUNS CAN BE LIMBERED OR UNLIMBERED. IT TAKES ONE MOVEMENT POINT TO LIMBER OR UNLIMBER A GUN. (GUNS CANNOT FIRE WHEN IN LIMBERED FORMATION).


MOVEMENT
ZULU UNITS DO NOT SUFFER ANY MOVEMENT PENALTIES IN THE WAY OTHER UNITS DO.
ALL OTHER UNITS SUFFER HALF MOVEMENT PENALTIES WHEN ENTERING AND TRAVERSING A HEX CONTAINING THE FOLLOWING TERRAIN FEATURES:
DESIGNATED ROUGH GROUND,STREAMS,DONGAS,HILLS,SLOPES &BARRICADES.
A UNITS FORMATION CAN EFFECT THE MOVEMENT OF THAT UNIT. +1 TO UNITS IN A COLUMN FORMATION (ZULU UNITS NOT AFFECTED).

-1 IF TARGET BEHIND COVER
-1 IF FIRING AT PRONE UNIT
-2 IF MOUNTED AND FIRING FROM THE SADDLE

ROLL X1 D12 TO SEE WHERE ROCKET LANDS! 1-6 = DIRECTION ON DRIFT TEMPLATE, ROLL X1 D6 TO SEE HOW MANY HEXES IN THAT DIRECTION ROCKET DEVIATES TO DETERMIN THE TARGET HEX FOR ROCKET IMPACT.
7-12 HITS TARGET HEX.

SMOKE – PLACE ON UNIT WHEN FIRED, REMOVE AT END OF TURN.

That would be a good idea, as soon as I have painted enough ZULUS!! I will see Paul and Sally at Warfare and see if we can fix a date in the new year :)

I have just painted up 2,000 Zulus, how many do I put on a stand for your rules?
